Medieval Castles- We are not talking about castles here, we are talking about "Medieval Castles" and this brings some very specific things to mind. A castle is a large and beautiful stone structure that housed Kings and protected its people from the sieges and attacks of enemies. They were sometimes lavish and sometimes very plain... What is a Castle? Over a thousand years of castle buildng and just about every continent and culture has built them. But what exactly is a Castle? What makes it a castle? The answer is easy. What is a Castle? Castles of the World Interactive Google Map This is such a fun project that I have been working on for a while. It is a google map with the locations of world castles on it. You can look around the world, zoom in on countries, click on a castle icon, and learn more about that particular castle. Fun and pretty neat. It was built in 1907 and right now is not being used for need of renovations. Big beautiful building with gorgeous yellow bricks. Also has a Greek Revival Hall and a gardens. Binchester Roman Fort - This is an archaeological ruins in the U.K. It was an active Roman Fort for almost 500 years. It dates back to the 11th century where a Motte and Bailey stood on the current site. This is a beautiful and compact castle that is still very much in tact and open to the public. And it is all tied in with the famous Lindisfarne Mead. Barnard Castle - This is a castle that is now in ruins. It is about 900 years old and was used for 500 years, changing and growing over those centuries. I have lots of good stuff on this castle including pictures, an article and floor plans. Barnard Castle Scarborough Castle - This castle is mostly in ruins but it is impeccably maintained and a beautiful site for a castle with an amazing view. Helmsley Castle - This is a wonderful castle with an almost thousand year history. It has been passed from generation to generation and it has survived a siege. And it has had an astonishing history over the past thousand years.
